New York City, June 7, 2012 —The Race for Education is proud to celebrate the life and career of Robert J. Frankel with its 10th Anniversary Luncheon in honor of the Racing Hall of Fame trainer today with special guest speaker Steve Haskin, distinguished correspondent for the Blood-Horse at New York’s TriBeCa Grill.
Frankel’s estate has contributed approximately $150,000 to The Race For Education to establish an endowed scholarship. The Robert J. Frankel Horsemen’s Scholarship will be $5,000 annually and will be offered to a student whose family is employed in the Thoroughbred industry so that he or she can attend the college of their choice. Each year, the scholarship will be offered in a different jurisdiction where Mr. Frankel raced.

The Race for Education is pleased to announce Ms. Brittani Koons of Gahanna, Ohio, as the first recipient of the Isaac Murphy Scholarship. This college scholarship is sponsored jointly by Team Valor International Racing and the stables owners, Barry and Kathleen Irwin and is awarded to an African American student that has a passion to work in the equine industry upon graduation. Criteria for this scholarship include financial need, communication skills, leadership, and commitment to the agriculture industry. This scholarship will be awarded to one student annually. The Race For Education celebrates its tenth anniversary of helping students reach the finish line on the path to higher education by awarding at least $525,000 in college scholarships. This is in addition to $3.5 million dollars awarded to over 375 students since the organization’s inception. Of the 2012 awards, approximately $100,000 will be allocated to Education majors participating in the Starting Gate Teaching Interns Program, $150,000 for Veterinary students and $275,000 for various Equine and Agriculture related scholarships.>> More

Teaching Internship Opportunity

A teaching internship is being developed with participating area colleges/universities for students pursuing degrees in education. The Starting Gate Program Coordinator will work with the individual college/university internship program coordinator to determine the structure of the internship. At successful completion of this internship, participating college students will receive a $1000 scholarship from The Race For Education to be used for tuition. Interns are also eligible to apply for the RFE’s Assets for Independence Program which could qualify them for an extra $4000 to be used for tuition costs. All interns work with a bilingual (Spanish), certified teacher with 12 years of teaching experience. Interns will be asked to teach large group lessons, as well as small group break-outs, assist with homework, and accompany the group on field trips once per month.>> More

A drawing will be held for one free season to Einstein at Adena Springs’ Open House Stallion Show on January 8th, 2012, with the value of the stud fee to be donated to the Race for Education’s Starting Gate Youth Program at schools in Bourbon County. In addition, Adena Springs will donate a portion of the proceeds of every Einstein breeding contract signed that day to the same program. The Thoroughbred Scholarship is available to undergraduate students from any background wishing to pursue a career in pre-veterinary medicine (equine practice only), equine science, racetrack management, equine business management or pasture management as it pertains to horse farms, and other related fields. (Riding certification programs are not eligible.)
To be eligible for this scholarship, a student must
• be 24 years old or younger as of September 1 of the application year,
• have at least a 2.85 cumulative GPA,
• have an annual household income of less than $50,000 OR be financially independent from parents.*

"WinStar has been so generous in providing their facility the last few years and we are thankful for their support. The success of the tournament and the interest from more farm teams has created a need for additional parking and more spectator seating," stated Elisabeth Jensen, President and Executive Director of The Race For Education. UK Equine Initiative to host UK Equine Showcase on Jan. 20th and the 3rd Annual Kentucky Breeders' Short Course, Jan. 21st

The University of Kentucky Equine Initiative will host a UK Equine Showcase Jan. 20 and the 3rd Annual Kentucky Breeders’ Short Course Jan. 21 at the UK Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in Lexington.
The UK Equine Showcase is a program highlighting the latest UK equine research focused on the young horse. The program will run from 1 to 5 p.m. with a reception following.
The 3rd Annual Kentucky Breeders’ Short Course is an in-depth equine reproductive program from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 21 with lunch provided.

Nick Craighead of Del City, Okla., has been named the winner of the 2011 Racing Officials Accreditation Program Scholarship (ROAP) through the assistance of the Race for Education. The purpose of this scholarship is to enable students the opportunity to pursue a career in the horse racing industry as a racing official. Mr. Craighead was in law enforcement for 14 years and has been involved in the horse industry for the past four years.>> More

The Race for Education(RFE) is excited to announce that its Starting Gate Program officially launched on Monday, September 12th at Paris Independent Middle School. The official launch of the Starting Gate program at Leestown Middle School is October 3rd. A similar after-school youth program has been in operation by the Race For Education in New York since 2009. We have had a high rate of success in educating and mentoring 7th and 8th graders through a study hall program involving community volunteers, educational field trips and lectures given by inspirational community speakers.>> More

The Allison Pareis documentary “Sculpting The Wind: Alexa King and The Making of the Barbaro Memorial Statue” won two Emmy Awards in June from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Lower Great Lakes chapter in Cleveland. Producer Allison Pareis won an Emmy in the Crafts: Director, Post Production category, for shaping the visual and sonic elements of the program. Audio engineer Stan Sollars won the Emmy for Crafts: Audio, for his sound mix of “Sculpting The Wind.” >> More

Elmont local, Victoria Casso had been selected to receive the 2011 Fleet Indian Scholarship in memory of Olivia M. Saylor from The Race For Education.

Jacqueline is originally from Chile and lived in Venezuela for five years. She is bilingual and moved to the United States in 1980. She has lived in Lexington since 1996 and worked as a paraeducator for six years at Maxwell Elementary School’s Spanish Immersion Program. She fell in love with the teaching profession and returned to school to earn her B.A. in Elementary Education from the University of Kentucky and continue working with Fayette County Public Schools. $24,000 in scholarship funds will be awarded to Alicja Woronowicz of Escondido, Calif. Woronowicz, a high school senior from Rancho Bernardo High School in San Diego, Calif., was chosen as the 2011 Ashado Scholarship recipient from over 28 other female U.S. applicants. This scholarship is awarded to the most outstanding female applicant from the Race For Education’s Thoroughbred Scholarship pool. A check presentation will take place honoring Woronowicz on Saturday, June 4th at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. Over $125,000 in scholarship funds were recently awarded to 31 equine veterinary students from U.S., Canadian and West Indies schools and colleges of veterinary medicine were awarded the Race for Education’s Winner’s Circle Scholarship. The Winner's Circle Scholarship Program is designed to encourage and support veterinary students intending to enter equine veterinary medicine, to reward leadership and participation in Student Chapters of the AAEP (SCAAEP) and to help offset the escalating cost of veterinary education and minimize debt load at graduation by providing financial aid to students in their 4th year of veterinary school.

Three RFE scholarship recipients played an important role in the recent World Equestrian Games held in Lexington, Kentucky in 2010. Kirsty Husby (Iowa State), Kate LeVasseur (Wisconsin University) and Amy Norvall (LSU) were amongst 33 fourth year veterinary students handpicked by their veterinary school advisors to best represent their school to form a veterinary team for the games. Each veterinary school in the United States and Canada sent their best equine oriented student to work under the supervision of Dr. Julie Wilson, Dr. Tracy Turner and Dr. Kent Allen.

Race for Education Forms New Alliances and Offers More Scholarship Options

With ten potential scholarship opportunities offered by the Race For Education (RFE) in 2011, students’ dreams of obtaining a college education just got a little closer. Despite a tough economic climate, The Race For Education raised over $835,000 in 2010 and anticipates maintaining the same level of awards throughout 2011.
One of the newest RFE scholarship additions includes an alliance with the National Horseman’s Benevolence and Protective Association (National HBPA) in administering the Horseman’s Scholarship Program. Students are eligible for up to $6000 per year and the National HBPA will help promote the program directly through over 30 National HBPA affiliates representing nearly 50,000 horsemen and horsewomen across North America. This outreach will be done one-on-one at the HBPA affiliate level as well as through the National HBPA’s official magazine, The Horseman’s Journal, and electronically via social media (National HBPA Blog and Facebook page). >> More

The Race for Education (RFE) is excited to announce its plans to create a Kentucky Youth Outreach Program to benefit middle school-aged children of central Kentucky. A similar after-school youth program was launched by the RFE in New York in 2009 and was designed to enhance the educational experience of backstretch workers’ children at Belmont Park Racetrack in Elmont, NY. KER establishes Lawrence Fellowship at the University of Kentucky

Kentucky Equine Research has established a graduate student fellowship at the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture to honor the memory of Larry Lawrence, a valued KER employee for many years. The Lawrence Fellowship, worth more than $25,000 per year, will fund a graduate student in a program of study related to applied equine sciences. Catherine Whitehouse, a former KER intern, is the first fellowship recipient. She earned a degree in equine science from Lincoln University in England, where she prepared a dissertation on seasonal changes in nonstructural carbohydrate accumulation in pasture grasses as related to studying the causes of laminitis. Bob Coleman, assistant professor in the Department of Animal and Food Sciences and associate director of the Equine Initiative, will advise Whitehouse.

WinStar Farm will again be hosting the 2011 Horse Farm Basketball Tournament, presented by TVG to benefit The Race for Education and the Blue Grass Farms Charities. Twelve teams will compete in a double elimination tournament for the title, currently held by returning champions Three Chimneys Farm. This year’s tournament will also feature an exhibition game between Churchill Downs and Keeneland, prior to the final game on January 28th. >> More

Race For Education Boardmember Paul Saylor's daughter Olivia Saylor died in a fire in her home in Charleston South Carolina on Saturday morning January 1st. She was 21. Olivia was familiar to many of us at The Race For Education, participating in events related the to Ashado Scholarship and the Fleet Indian Scholarship, both sponsored by her father. We would like to express our most sincere condolences to Mr. Saylor and his family and to Olivia's many friends.

More than 100 dignitaries, alumni, donors and students today celebrated the groundbreaking for a new equine center wing, the first-ever addition to the University of Louisville College of Business. We will be taking submissions from folks of all ages and backgrounds and selecting our ‘favorites’ for some special awards, including $500 and $1000 scholarships at this year’s Syracuse Invitational Sporthorse Tournament! In addition, some stories will be selected for display at the event and may also be posted on the SI website. Race For Education and National Turf Writer’s Association 2008 Journalism Scholarship recipient, Allison Pareis, received a grant from WIPB-TV/Ball State University to produce a documentary about Alexa King and her journey through creating one of the most widely-recognized and respected equine memorials, Barbaro at Churchill Downs.
The Premier of Sculpting the Wind and a cocktail reception will be held on Wednesday, April 28, 2010 in the Pollard Gallery at the Kentucky Derby Museum.
