WKYT TV CHIEF METEOROLOGIST T.G. SHUCK WILL KICK OFF THE RACE FOR EDUCATION ANNUAL 5K/10K RACE
 
     Lexington, Ky.—September 19, 2011—The Race for Education (RFE) is taking to the streets of downtown Midway, Kentucky, on Saturday, October 8thth.
     Serious runners and weekend joggers alike are invited to enter the starting gates for the Ninth Annual Race For Education 5K/10K Run, which will be sponsored by Equus Standardbred Station. Cash prizes await the top male and female winners of the 5K and 10K in addition to many other prizes.
     Overall, more than 100 awards will be bestowed on participants, who will be supporting The Race For Education’s Karri Casner Memorial Scholarship Fund through their participation. A national education scholarship foundation, The Race For Education has awarded over $3,500,000 in college scholarships to 374 students in 34 states from a broad variety of backgrounds and an additional $500,000 in educational programs since the organization was founded in 2002.      
      “I am so proud of all of the support we receive from the community for this event. Each year we sell out all of the kilometer sponsorships and receive so much involvement from the local businesses it truly makes the event special,” says Elisabeth Jensen, the organization’s President and Executive Director. 
      This year WKYT TV Chief Meteorologist, T.G. Shuck will ride the historic engine, dispatched by R.J. Corman and blow its whistle to signify the start of the race. The 2011 t-shirt is sponsored by Kentucky Equine Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation Center.
     Some of the most prestigious names in our community are giving a boost to the 5K and 10K competitions. The Jockey Club, the National Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association, Juddmonte Farms, McCauley Brothers,  Taylor Made Farm and Sales, Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital, Horse Racing Radio Network, Ashford Stud, A1 Sanitation, RJ Corman Railroad Group, John’s Run/Walk Shop, and the University of Kentucky Equine Initiative are sponsors at various levels.
    Veterans of previous races know that Midway offers a lovely setting in the autumn and that the emphasis is on fun as well as competition. Post race breakfast and entertainment will be provided.

       

The Race For Education usually has about 300-500 participants in the race each year. There are many divisions and prizes, including wheelchair and stroller!  Walkers are welcome!  No dogs are permitted on the course.

AWARDS - OVER $1000 IN CASH PRIZES:

*First, second, and third place winners in each age category will be awarded medals.

*5K Stroller Division: 1st place $50 gift certificate to Stride Rite; 2nd and 3rd receive medals. 

 *Plus numerous door prizes! 
 
*No awards may be duplicated.

Register in advance online at http://www.raceforeducation.org/events-signup/ or at John's Run/Walk Shop the day before the race FROM 4:30-7PM.  You may also register in Midway on the day of the race. Online registration opens August 1st. Entrant must complete the 5k within 50 minutes and the 10K within 75 minutes of starting to be eligible for prizes and awards.

Cost: $20 pre-registration; $25 on race day; ONLINE REGISTRATION ENDS AT 1PM ON 10/7/11.
